Better Materials Need the Right Pathway
Plant-based compostable bags offer an alternative to conventional plastic for selected applications. Depending on the product specification, they can incorporate plant-derived materials and certified compostable polymers designed for an appropriate end-of-life route. Their benefit goes beyond the bag itself. Verified certification, correct use, separate collection and access to a suitable composting pathway all matter in helping the material reach its intended end of life.

THE MATERIAL CHALLENGE
Compostable Bags Need the Right Waste System
Conventional plastic bags can persist when they are not properly recovered or managed. Compostable alternatives can support organic-waste and sustainable-procurement programmes when matched to the right application, recognised certification and an appropriate disposal or composting pathway.

Certification, Collection and Composting Must Work Together
A compostable bag is designed to biodegrade and disintegrate under the conditions defined by its certification. It should be used only where the bag, its contents and the receiving waste-management system are compatible. Compostability does not mean the product will disappear quickly in landfill, the sea or open soil, and it should never be treated as permission to litter.
